Todd Phillips: “No Plans for Old School 2″

Old School director Todd Phillips seems to have gotten his mojo back with The Hangover after his doomed 2006 comedy School for Scoundrels (despite that film’s hilarious Ben Stiller cameo). Since Phillips is doing press to promote

his new movie, he’s being interviewed on a host of topics including a sequel to the seminal Frat Pack film. Cinematical’s interview touches on a subject we’re particularly interested in:

Cinematical: Speaking of Old School, has a sequel gotten back on track?
Phillips: No, it’s not on track right now. Dreamworks had a thing and they sold it to Paramount, but all of that business stuff aside, right now we’re not makingĀ Old School 2. We have no plans to makeĀ Old School 2 right now.

Though Luke Wilson has (repeatedly) said he’d be up for a sequel, it’s highly unlikely that Will Ferrell or Vince Vaughn would be up for a second trip back to school. So, this project has always been a long-shot. Time to temper our enthusiasm for the time being.

Phillips did have praise for the Old School star that is also in the news this weekend with his own film.

Will Ferrell is the sweetest, most innocent eyes and face, so he can get away with so much. So much of the comedians we all love, Jack Black, Ben Stiller, there’s a darkness to them, which is what we love about them, but you look at Will’s eyes and there is no darkness in Will.

The Cinematical interview with Phillips touches on a number of topics, including Phillips’ comparison to his films and that of Judd Apatow.

I love Judd Apatow movies, I love them, and I just read a piece that they showed me, and it said, the most un-Apatow or anti-Apatow or something to that effect, and I know what he means. What he means is that non-sentimental version of that.

We’ll be checking out The Hangover this weekend and will see how sentimental it actually is.

I cannot believe that Old School 2 is not a priority. Old school is my favourite movie of all time. Everyone I know rates Old school in their top 5 movies. Get organised and get a sequel started now!

Very disappointed that there are no plans to make an Old School sequel. I had heard years ago that there was a script and it was to take place in Daytona during spring break. Frank the Tank at spring break!? The idea of that alone had me laughing. I really hope someone gets the ball rolling again because Old School was an instant classic that absolutely needs to be revisited! With that said….I’m excited about The Hangover 2. Looks hysterical
