Eastbound & Down

2009’s most fearless TV debut, Eastbound & Down, comes to DVD this week. The six-episode HBO series stars co-creator Danny McBride and is far more of a star-turn than his buddy roles in Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express, or even his nominal star turn in The Foot Fist Way. The series mixes profane comedy, unflinching satire, and a heathy dose of drama for character we grow to care for. Take any random five minute segment and there are surely more laughs than McBride’s stillborn summer tentpole, Land of the Lost.

Executive Producer Will Ferrell appears in several segments, and one episode was directed by Adam McKay. Other familiar faces include Katy Mixon (Four Christmases), Andrew Daly (Semi-Pro), and Craig Robinson.

DVD extras include:

  • Commentary on episodes 1, 4, and 6 with creators Ben Best, Jody Hill, Danny McBride, and director David Gordon Green
  • Making of  Eastbound & Down
  • Kenny Powers: Greatest Hits
  • Schaeffer Motor Commercials: Two TV spots promoting the car dealership owned by Will Ferrell’s character
  • Stevie’s Dark Secret
  • Deleted Scenes

If you don’t have HBO or somehow missed this revelation, I give my personal guarantee that if you like Danny McBride, you will love Eastbound & Down.
