In its second week of release, Year One joined Land of the Lost at the loser’s table. The word of mouth was apparently terrible following last weekend’s $19 million opening, as the film’s sales fell 69% for a weekend gross of $6 million.

The film will not recoup its $60 million budget domestically, in addition to the $25-30 million Sony spent on promotion. Let’s not kid ourselves, Year One and Land of the Lost both had terrible reviews, but they do mark troubling times for our Frat Pack comedians. The big budget adventure film model only works when targeted at children (Night at the Museum.) It’s time for guys like Will Ferrell and Jack Black to take a hard look at why The Hangover is on its way to outgrossing Wedding Crashers.  It’s time for the boys to give us an old fashioned R-Rated buddy comedy, but leave the wigs and CGI at home.

This movie deserved better. But kudos on the most excellent headline.

  2. I still feel like this could have been so much better. Not that Land of the Lost was great, but with all the talent involved it just fell so short for me, personally.
