Carell, Ferrell, SNL Girls Among Emmy Nominees
Mixed bag among this year’s Primetime Emmy Award nominees. Steve Carell received his 4th consecutive nomination for The Office, while Will Ferrell received two nominations for his HBO special, Will Ferrell: You’re Welcome America: A Final Evening with George W. Bush. Carell’s Office co-star Rainn Wilson is the only other member of the show’s ensemble to be nominated this year (Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series), including the shocking snub of Amy Ryan for Guest Actress.
Ferrell’s HBO special netted him nominations for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special, and one for writing in that same category. Ferrell was previously nominated for Saturday Night Live in 2001… following his breakout year playing George W. Bush during the 2000 Election.
Speaking of SNL, thanks to expanded nomination fields and new rules for Variety Series, castmembers Amy Poehler and Kristen Wiig were both nominated as Supporting Actress in a Comedy, while Tina Fey’s Sarah Palin impersonation got her a Guest Actress in a Comedy nomination for the show. Fey’s 30 Rock was the big winner with a record-setting 22 nominations, including nominations for all 6 of its principal stars (Fey, Baldwin, Morgan, McBrayer and Krakowski.)
The 30 Rock onslaught left the entire Office writing staff empty-handed, by taking 4 of the 5 Writing nominations. Also left out: Steve Carell did not receive a directing nomination for the Office episode, “Broke.” Another program that was snubbed across the board was Danny McBride’s Eastbound & Down.
The Primetime Emmys will be held on Sunday, September 20th.

Happy Birthday to Will Ferrell who turns 42 today.
I noticed that multi-winner Jeremy Piven was not even nominated for Best Support Actor in a Comedy. Did he withdraw his name from consideration?
Glad to see Rainn Wilson score a nom. Too bad that once again Jenna Fischer was snubbed.
Too bad Eastbound and Down didn’t get any recognition. Funny show with some serious/tragic moments, and the direction was fantastic in every episode.
