Michael Cera Plays Against Type in ‘Youth in Revolt’
When we reviewed Year One we noted that while we’ve enjoyed Michael Cera’s halting commentary, it was time for him to play against type and stretch himself as an actor. Playing a villain would be an even better choice. So, it was with trepidation that we took a look at the trailer for Cera’s October film Youth in Revolt.
Based on C.D. Payne’s cult-hit novel, the movie is the outrageous and heartwarming tale of Nick Twisp (Michael Cera) and his quest to win the heart of Sheeni (Portia Doubleday) and hopefully lose his virginity along the way. Also appearing are Zach Galifianakis, Fred Willard, and Justin Long. The film is directed by Miguel Arteta who is probably best known for 2002’s The Good Girl with Jennifer Aniston and John C. Reilly.
Cera starts out in typical fashion, playing a lovelorn high school student. But things get interesting about halfway through the trailer as the character invents an aggressive alter-ego. The devil to his angel. The villain to his hero.
Cera plays against type. Against himself.

Youth In Revolt One-Sheet Poster
Youth in Revolt opens on October 30.

The trailer looks good, I might see this. Don’t know about him playing against type though. It still seems like he’s playing George Michael Bluth again.
I never watched Arrested Development (I know… goodbye street cred), so I wouldn’t know. If Cera’s role on AD was that more of an a-hole then I guess you’re right. But I don’t recall seeing him on screen being aggressive and dickish.
George Michael was basically Evan from Superbad… or Bleaker from Juno… or Nick from Nick & Norah…
The same awkward teen you see in the first half of this trailer.
