Judd Apatow was interviewed by Empire Online and discussed the possibility of a sequel to Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. While we’ve heard previous reports of discussions for a sequel, Apatow indicates that this project is being driven by writer-director Adam McKay and writer-star Will Ferrell, not producer Apatow.

“They’re making a movie now, Will and Adam,” said Apatow, referring to police comedy The Other Guys. “But I guess it’s a little bit more a possibility than it was a year ago, when it wasn’t being discussed at all.”  Then Apatow discussed the previous discussions for a sequel, and whether there is any urgency to make the film in a timely manner due to the age of the actors and other continuity issues.

“When we made Anchorman, Adam and Will had a lot of ideas about what the sequel would be – they’d always laugh about where they’d take the characters. The great thing is, Will can be any age and play that character. Those anchormen sometimes have their jobs until they’re 75 years old. So we would always laugh that this movie could work if everybody’s really elderly.”

So, it sounds like The Other Guys is definitely a go, though I don’t think that filming has started yet. Moreover, I guess it will be a while before we have any firm discussions about a sequel. Perhaps McKay and Ferrell can visit Anchorman costars Steve Carell and Paul Rudd this fall on the set of their upcoming film, Dinner for Schmucks.

Thanks to our British editor Vicky Millington for the tip.

I’m afraid to ask which (if either) has a better chance of getting made: Anchorman 2 or the Arrested Development movie.
