Christoph Waltz

This is incredibly great news for Seth Rogen’s currently filming The Green Hornet. Rumors had tapped Nicholas Cage for the role of the villain in the movie, but word comes that Austrian-born European-television actor and Inglourious Basterds Oscar shoo-in Christoph Waltz has been cast.

With the casting of Waltz and replacing Cage, we can sense what this role is going to be about. Similar to Gary Cole’s turn as the heavy in Rogen’s previous action-comedy, Pineapple Express, expect to Waltz blend comedy with the action and villain-y things. And expect a lot of chewing of the scenery. The obvious prototype for this role is Alan Rickman’s seminal turn as Hans Gruber in Die Hard, and after seeing Waltz in Basterds I know he’ll doing an outstanding job. His role as the Nazi colonel definitely is a mix of charm and sadism. So, he’s really got all the goods to play the role.

Plus, given budget concerns, you’ve got to expect that his salary will be considerably less than Cage’s in what is likely a supporting turn, rather than a lead performance. Also, Waltz has got the buzz going now, and he’s an absolute lock for an Oscar nomination this year and a likely front-runner. That can only bode well for The Green Hornet when it bows in theatres in December 2010.

Yeah but his films and TV series are on Austrian TV too.
It’s kind of like Canada and the US.
And we Austrians don’t like our now successful guy referred to as German ;-)
