Tough times for John C. Reilly at the box office. Months ago there was talk of Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant becoming the first film of a Cirque franchise like Twilight. That will not be the case, as The Vampire’s Assistant opened in 8th place with a disappointing $6.34 million for the weekend.

The film hadn’t been carrying much buzz, the reviews were poor, but there had been some wondering if the vampire film could find an audience in the pre-Halloween market. But that quota had already been filled the surprise success of Paranormal Activity and the 143rd film in the Saw franchise. Here’s hoping Reilly finds better success with his two upcoming indie comedies: Safety Men with Jonah Hill and Cedar Rapids with Ed Helms.

In other box office news, Couples Retreat held on for a third week, bringing in another $11 million, for a $78 million cume so far. The Vince Vaughn comedy should slide in with final numbers just under $100 million. While it’s not the success Four Christmases was, it is the best showing by a Frat Pack film for the year next to Night at the Museum 2.

Another funny headline from Rick Duran. Great update for Couples Retreat, too.
