‘Couples Retreat’ Crosses $100m at Box Office
Vince Vaughn’s sole 2009 film, Couples Retreat, did not receive great notices from critics, but a favorable release window and excellent box office “legs” has propelled the ensemble comedy past the $100 million mark in North America. After the film’s sixth weekend, box office estimates are putting the total gross at $102 million domestically. Perhaps aided by lack of competition from traditional comedies, the film has shown strong staying power in theatres. In fact, per-screen average actually went up last weekend (unheard of for a film in it’s fifth week of release).
Couples Retreat has also taken in over $20 million overseas according to Box Office Mojo and is the fifth film starring Vince Vaughn to cross the $100m line (after Dodgeball, Wedding Crashers, The Break-Up, and Four Christmases).

One impressive thing is considering how fast two films that opened with similar numbers, Bruno & Funny People, quickly tapered off within 2 weeks. I’ll be honest, based on the reviews, I was expecting Couple Retreat to fall off just as quickly.
