Apatow Picks Up 3 Pitches from Aziz Ansari
The long-mentioned “Raaaandy” Funny People spin-off is officially in motion, as Judd Apatow and Universal Pictures have acquired rights to it, and two other potential projects, from Parks and Recreation star Aziz Ansari and his Human Giant collaborator Jason Woliner, who would direct each of the films, should they move forward into production.
The three projects moved forward after a breakfast meeting with Apatow, whom immediately loved all three potential ideas instead of deciding on just one. In addition to the Randy film, which would follow Ansari’s Funny People character, the other two projects are:
- Let’s Do This: a buddy comedy about two guys working for a motivational speaking company on a roadtrip.
- An untitled space comedy where Ansari would star as a “disgraced cosmonaut forced to return to outer space to clear his name.”
Ansari, who had brief roles this year in Observe and Report (yelling, “Fuck you, Ronnie!”) and I Love You, Man (yelling, “Fuck you, Larry!”), will next be seen in Apatow Productions’ Get Him to the Greek (or Get Me to the Gig, according to IMDb.) You can catch more of Ansari as Randy on the Funny People DVD which is available in stores today.

I like the “Let’s Do This” and sort of the untitled space comedy, but a RAAAAAAAAAANDY movie sounds like a terrible idea. I like Aziz in everything he’s done except his character in Funny People. I like the movie, but I hated him in it. He wasn’t funny at all!
yeah i liked him more for his douchey qaulities in funny people, the character you love to hate i guess. but i dont think i could endure 90 minutes of it, that character is an asshole.
I’d also have to agree. He’s very funny and talented, but I didn’t care for RAAANNNDY. Did anyone see him in comedy central funny people special? (only mildly funny at best)
To add to my statment from earlier, I watched the Randy Documentary on youtube today. I thought the parts where he wasn’t doing stand-up were pretty humorous. In my opinon there seems to be potential for a Randy movie and could make for a funny mockumentary, if they choose to go that route. Hopefully the Apatow factory will make yet another great film.
