Carell and Fey Already Plotting Next Film
Are they the next Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan or the new Ben Stiller/Owen Wilson? Hot off the buzz for next April’s Date Night, Steve Carell and Tina Fey are already considering a new project that could film as early as next Spring. Comedy’s dream-couple are loosely-attached to Mail-Order Groom for Warner Bros, a script from 30 Rock writers Robert Carlock, Scott Silveri and show-producer/Fey’s husband Jeff Richmond. Fey would star as “a single woman orders a mail-order groom from Eastern Europe,” played by Carell.
The project has quickly moved into play after WB pushed back production on Get Smart 2 (which Carell is co-writing) for another year. The only window to film would be this Spring when Carell and Fey are on their respective Office and 30 Rock season hiatuses. This could be further complicated by both stars being locked in to an extensive press tour for Date Night, which opens April 9th, 2009.
Mail-Order Groom has not lined up a director, but Warner Bros has quickly set up an impressive shortlist: Jay Roach (Meet the Parents, Carell’s upcoming Dinner for Schmucks), Richard Linklater (School of Rock) and Jonathan Dayton/Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine.)
Warner Bros has also just snatched up rights for an untitled script by Cars/Bolt writer Dan Fogelman, in which Carell would star as a father whose marital troubles lead him to find a stronger bond with his children. Could this be another Dan in Real Life? The script must be good, because WB put up over a million dollars to lock-in the project, a deal similar to the one Universal put up for the Jonah Hill/Jason Segel/Jason Schwartzman comedy The Adventurer’s Handbook; the studio is clearly seeing Carell as a priority now that Get Smart 2’s delay has him wide-open during his break from The Office.
Personally, I’m hoping the people in charge make the new Carell/Fey project happen, as they are just a perfect match (especially after seeing the Date Night trailer.) What do you think?
In case you missed it the first time…

Of course we’re biased here in Fratville, but I was surprised to see the hate on some other movie blogs about the Date Night trailer. I think that thing looks awesome and agree that Carell/Fey seem to have great chemistry.
