Danny McBride is set to reteam with The Foot Fist Way director Jody Hill (Observe and Report) on a new action comedy. According to Variety, McBride is set to star in L.A.P.I., where he’ll play a “beaten down private investigator.” The script is from Michael Diliberti and Matthew Sullivan.

The devil will be in the details for this film, following the disappointing box office of Hill’s last directorial effort, Observe and Report. Is this dark and powerful like that film, or will it feature McBride in a more traditional action-comedy, ala Pineapple Express?

McBride and Hill are currently working on the second season of HBO’s Eastbound and Down.

A couple months ago, I was reading that Jody Hill has been secretly writing a mafia drama set in the South. If directing a more straight-forward traditional comedy gives him the leverage to eventually make that movie, then I hope L.A.P.I. is very mainstream.
