‘Zoolander 2′ Coming Soon with Jonah Hill as Villain?
Nikki Finke is reporting that Ben Stiller and Justin Theroux are finalizing a script for a sequel to 2001’s seminal Frat Pack film, Zoolander. Theroux who cowrote Tropic Thunder with Stiller also appeared in the original as the Evil DJ. Word is that unlike the original, Stiller will pass the directing reins to Theroux who ”is going to Fashion Week in Paris to “immerse himself on what is current in fashion”.”
Paramount will be producing the film that like the original is slated to be PG-13. No word yet on whether Owen Wilson will reprise his role as Hansel. However, the big news is that Jonah Hill is being tapped for the villain in the film. Hill famously cameoed in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian and this is a character that could be the son of Mugatu from the first film or just a brand new character.
Zoolander featured three Frat Pack stars in lead roles, including Stiller, Wilson, and Will Ferrell. Among that film’s many, many cameos was a mute Vince Vaughn as Luke Zoolander, Derek Zoolander’s coal-mining brother. It was the first comedic appearance for Vaughn in many years and was, at the time, a bit of a shock. But after a series of comedic films in 2003-2005 the funny cameo is something people would hardly blink at today.
The first film was famously released shortly after 9/11 and did low-ish business at the box office. But it’s certainly Ben Stiller’s signature role, and it isn’t uncommon to see fans ask Ben to drop Blue Steel or Magnum.
