Looks like talks with Dustin Hoffman have fallen through with another project, as reports have now pegged Steve Martin as the third costar of The Big Year, to begin filming in May. Owen Wilson and Jack Black are still attached to the book adaptation about bird watchers competing to spot a rare bird. The film is adapted from “The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession” by Mark Obmascik and to be directed by David Frankel (Marley & Me).  The film is being produced by Ben Stiller and Red Hour Productions.

Though Martin does not have previous Frat Pack connections, as long as he’s in “wild and crazy” mode I could see him working for this film. He certainly fits the character profile as an older retired business man described as “outdoorsy pink in his cheeks, slate-blue eyes.”

Meanwhile, this marks the first time that Wilson and Black have costarred since Stiller’s failed TV pilot Heat Vision and Jack back in 1999. Both stars recently guest starred on NBC’s Community.
