People can complain all day about comic book conventions being overrun by Hollywood, but this is a case where the synergy of comics and cinema isn’t cause for a shoehorned PR stunt. Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, and Jonah Hill appeared at Comic-Con yesterday to promote their November release Megamind that an actual honest-to-God superhero storyline.

Ferrell plays the central character, the sympathetic “supervillain” of the film (shades of Despicable Me, perhaps?). So, like so many other comic nerds, appeared in costume at Comic-Con! But rather than rely on a big budget for his threads, Ferrell went D.I.Y for comic effect.

There are numerous reports on the internet about how the rest of the panel went. Lots of jokey jokes about the early AM panel’s starting time (cue “I didn’t bring enough donuts for everyone” jokes), or the absence of star Brad Pitt (cue “here he his… oh, it’s just a cutout” gag). In fact, the panel actually spoiled quite a bit of the film’s plot (see Deadline for a very spoilery look at the panel).

The good news is that the film sounds richer and more daring than the initial trailer might indicate, and best of all that Jonah Hill’s character is playing something other than a pathetic lackey.
