McBride among names being approached to join ‘The Office’

Danny McBride
Could Danny McBride be eyed to replace Steve Carell on The Office? EW is reporting the Eastbound & Down star, and Flight of the Conchords‘ Rhys Darby, have been “quietly approched” by Office producers about joining the cast later next year.
Office showrunner Paul Lieberstein (ie, “Toby”) has confirmed that the show is considering adding a new salesman, but not necessarily to replace Carell’s Michael Scott. Darby’s reps were unavailable for comment, but McBride’s team has issued the following statement:”“Danny is very happy on Eastbound & Down.”
Darby would be a choice fit for the show, possibly even channeling some of the quieter awkward moments that made the show great. McBride however is probably too big of a star and too busy for such a huge role. However, the McBride consideration makes us wonder if producers have warmed to the suggestion of our own editor Kevin Crossman’s pitch of upgrading David Koechner’s Todd Packer to Branch Manager of Dunder Mifflin Scranton.

I don’t love “big name” stars but I wouldn’t mind McBride as the boss. Like Rick said, I’m still holding out hope for Todd Packer though. That would present a more natural adversarial relationship for Jim, for example.
Ooh… screw McBride, I’d be down for Rhys Darby. If you thought Michael called too many meetings, wait till Murry gets there!
By the way, I totally hate Rhys Darby.
I’m not down for either. Danny will never join The Office, he’s got his own lead role on a critically accalaimed HBO show and has a busy movie career. Get ready for Ed Helms to say goodbye also. He’s too big of a star to be on The Office.
Yeah I hope Packer is promoted, some say he is too sexually based and crude but Michael was the same way. Packer is similar to Scott because he has friction with many of the employees already and he is already apart of the show so it wouldnt be an awkward transition from Scott to a completely new character. Scrap Gabe too his character is like watching a car wreck develop slowly.
I agree, Gabe is so useless.
I don’t really watch The Office on a regular basis, so I’m not going to comment on what would best for the show, but in general terms: wouldn’t it be funny if someone (say Packer) was promoted to be an interim replacement for Scott, and then to have him interview candidates for the job? That way he could try to sabotage and promote his own agenda in order to be made permanent boss, while interviewees would be “auditioning” for the part - on the actual show.
Lots of new storylines to be had from it, at least. And lots of guest stars.
PS: Rhys Darby is totally awesome.
