Seann William Scott

About two months after the story first surfaced, Seann William Scott has officially joined Jay Baruchel’s raunchy hockey comedy, Goon.  Scott will play the film’s lead role Doug Glatt, a bouncer with new found skills who joins a low-level hockey team, leading them to greatness. Baruchel stars as Glatt’s best friend.

Allison Pill (last seen as Michael Cera’s drummer/ex-girlfriend in Scott Pilgrim) stars as the film’s female lead, while Liev Schreiber is also joining in an unnamed role.

Jay Baruchel co-wrote the script (described as a ‘Hard-R’ ‘funnier Raging Bull‘) with Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen’s writing/producing partner on Superbad, Pineapple Express and The Green Hornet. The film will be directed by indie filmmaker Michael Dowse, beginning next month in Winnipeg.

As we previously reported back in July, Goon’s casting is problematic for filmmaker Kevin Smith, who had been writing another hockey film titled Hit Somebody, with the lead role being written specifically for Seann William Scott, whom previously worked with him on Cop-Out and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

We all know what happened two movies with similar themes were made. One was mediocre and successful (Paul Blart) and the other was fearless but a bomb at the box office (Observe and Report)
