Will Forte and Bill Hader

The Ghostbusters reboot has been one of the most-rumored projects of the last four years. Every major comedy name in Hollywood (Stiller, Carell, Rogen, Rudd) has been whispered at some point. Last week, a story hit the web saying mentioning Anna Faris, Bill Hader and Will Forte were among the names being looked at. Dan Aykroyd later confirmed some of this.  Here’s a roundup of the most current rumblings:

  • Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (The Office, Year One) have been developing a screenplay. Ivan Reitman is to direct. Project would involve the original team and a crew of younger members.
  • Sony has reportedly set a May 2011 startdate for filming.
  • Anna Faris’ name appeared on an audition ad, mentioning she’d be playing a “young Ghostbuster Creative Commons.” Auditions for “18-30 year-olds” would be taking place in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York.
  • An Chicago casting “source” could not confirm Faris, but has heard that Sony was looking at Bill Hader and Will Forte.
  • Dan Aykroyd tells Chicago radio station WGN that Hader and Faris are “strong possibilities,” along with Eliza Dushku. He also mentions that Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver will be returning.
  • Reps for Anna Faris tell Entertainment Weekly that she will not be joining the film.

So after a week of internet rambling, we’re back at: nothing. Hader did not address the rumors during his Thanksgiving stop at Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. All eyes will be on Dan Aykroyd, as he begins press for the sure-to-be-horrible Yogi Bear.

I know it is heresy to some, but I’ve never put Ghostbusters on the pedestal others have (I prefer 80’s films like Fletch or Caddyshack). But, the idea of 20-ish somethings makes a whole lot more sense than the 40-somethings like Stiller and Rudd. That said, I’ll buy Hader as respected up-and-comer. I don’t know that Forte has the “heft” that the original Ghostbusters had when the movie was filmed (disclosure: MacGruber is still seared in my brain, so you know…)

I know that picks have been done to death but mine would be

Paul Rudd - he looks much younger than his age
    Jesse Eisenberg
