Deadline has revealed that “everybody’s interested” in a pitch that went out to Hollywood studios for a new comedy centered around the 2012 election, that would feature Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis as competing Presidential candidates. The pitch also includes director Jay Roach (Meet the Parents, Dinner for Schmucks) at the helm.

This would be Ferrell and Galifianakis’ first major film project together. The duo originally toured together, during the 2008 “Funny or Die” Standup Comedy Tour. Ferrell was also scheduled to be a producer on Will, the Galifianakis-Paul Rudd comedy that may have died in development at Paramount Pictures.

Jay Roach recently directed Zach Galifianakis in Dinner for Schmucks, and won an Emmy for directing Recount, a biopic about the 2000 election between George W. Bush and Al Gore. Ferrell has received Tony and Emmy nominations for his Broadway stage show reviving his SNL portrayal of George W. Bush.

UPDATE (12.05.10):
Deadline reports that Warner Bros has won the bidding war, and is expected to give the film a “full-budget” (ie: what Paramount failed to do for Anchorman 2.) Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez Productions will produce the film, whose script is to be written by Chris Henchy (Gary Sanchez partner,  co-writer from The Other Guys and Entourage) and Eastbound and Down writer Shawn Harwell.  The film will quickly move into development, with it release specifically eyed for the heat of the 2012 Presidential election.

Oh god, this sounds amazing! I was just reading political news and getting frustrated before I came here, haha. This could be a huge success and put both of these guys higher on the radar than they’ve ever been.

usually when i see the cast and a outline for an upcoming film i’ll go “ummm okay”, or “uhhh IDK”, or “how are they going to do that” but with this film I easily go “OMG I can totally see it”

Oh gosh. I hate all of the political crap in comedy. I’m more of an independent myself but I have a feeling this entire film will be left-leaning.
