‘Green Hornet’ Publicity Gearing Up
A new poster for the forthcoming Seth Rogen action picture has been released, at the same time as a special Mythbusters episode delves into the reality of the film. And, is anyone hungry for burgers?
Seth Rogen’s passion picture, Green Hornet, doesn’t arrive until January 14 but that doesn’t mean the awareness and promotional campaign isn’t under full swing. A new poster for the film has been released that is a big brighter and whiter than the previous dark green ones. This one features costars Christoph Waltz and Cameron Diaz as well. I was wondering when they were going to start promoting Diaz in particular. I’m sure she didn’t come cheap (as one of the highest paid actresses) so it seemed like a wasted opportunity. Let’s see if makes a difference now…
In addition to all the regular promotional vehicles, there are some unusual places we’ve seen Green Hornet pop up lately.
First up is a special episode of Mythbusters. The episode aired earlier this week but is available in reruns and such, and there’s even a special Mythbusters: Green Hornet Special page with videos from the show and featuring Seth Rogen.
TheĀ Mythbusters team, with Seth as their assistant, tackles two pivotal scenes from the film. First up is ‘Explosive Escape,’ where The Green Hornet and his tech-savvy sidekick Kato are buried alive in the Green Hornet’s iconic car Black Beauty and blast their way out using the car’s built-in rockets. Adam, Jamie and Seth re-create this explosive silver screen scene… with a little TNT party.
Then, in ‘Elevator Car Cut,’ Seth requests that Kari, Grant and Tory take on another action sequence from the movie, where The Green Hornet and Kato again find themselves in a jam. After being shot up by bad guys they crash into an elevator. As the elevator ascends, it slices the car in half, leaving them to escape in the front half of the car. To test this scene, the team build their own elevator from 3.5 tons of steel, chop a car in half and take half a car to the racetrack. Will any of these results be Hollywood ready?
“I’m a big fan of MYTHBUSTERS,” said Rogen. “We were making a big action movie and it just seemed like the only time we could do something like this. I watch the show all the time and it just seemed cool to see if the stuff in our movie was possible in any way, shape or form.”
Finally, the success of the film is clearly related to how many kids and teens will come out to see the latest superhero film. Will they embrace it like Iron Man or with they ignore it like Jonah Hex? To improve the odds, I guess, Rogen and costar Jay Chou are starring in a new commercial for Carl’s Jr. Blending comedy and superhero films is tricky stuff… I still don’t know if this is working or not.
If my kids are any indication, the Mythbusters promo is actually quite a bit more interesting and “hipper” than the Carl’s Jr. ad. Whether that translates into box office we will see. The trailers for this summer’s Green Lantern probably aren’t helping with a potentially confused moviegoing public, though at least Green Hornet has the advantage of being released first. Perhaps this will help Rogen in ways that being second in line hurt Observe and Report.

I’m trying to believe my negative reaction towards this project is biased, and the film will be much better than I realize.
But those breaded chicken commercials… sorry, I just can’t.
After seeing one of the trailers, I was looking forward to this. Then I saw the Carl’s commercial where they blow up the drive-thru and my anticipation level sunk. Not funny and there’s no chemistry between the two. Hopefully the movie will be better, but I’m not sure this movie will be must see for me unless word of mouth is positive.
It’s started screening and most of the early word is positive. There’s one from Cinemablend.
