Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell

Two different kinds of movies are opening today with interest to our Frat Pack fans. One is in limited release, and has the dreaded “dramedy” label. The other is a broad R-rated comedy, but stars a bunch of women and not the typical ensemble of men.

Everything Must Go is opening in about 250 theatres this weekend. Will Ferrell is starring as a man who’s life unravels, losing his job and his marriage on the very same day. His wife throws all his belongings onto the front lawn, so he decides to live there while he gives it all away.

Bridesmaids stars Kristen Wiig, along with familiar faces Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper. The story comes from Wiig herself, following the Forgetting Sarah Marshall template for producer Judd Apatow.  Much is made about the female skew for a “raunchy” comedy, though I think this is potentially an easier sell for guys than gals. Bridesmaids opens in almost 3000 theatres this weekend.

Clearly, the box office focus will be on Bridesmaids. But I’m really looking forward to Everything Must Go, too. It looks similar to another Ferrell project, Stranger Than Fiction, which was quite good and Ferrell put in a great performance.

So, Frat fans, which one are you seeing?  If you see either film, leave a comment below.

I saw Everything Must Go at the LFF last year. It was great, really funny, and touching. I’m looking forward to seeing it again, but I’m also dying to see Bridesmaids. Kristen Wiig - I’ve said it before, I’m saying it again: funniest woman in America.

I’ve seen both, can safely say that Bridesmaids is the better film.

Why is the label of dramedy dreaded? I like dramedys.

Neither, since the damn studios aren’t opening either one in Mexico :/

“Will Ferrell in a new Dramedy” doesn’t exactly “sell” like “Kate Hudson in a new RomCom” or “Paul Rudd in a new Bromance” does it? That’s all. Like I said, I liked Stranger than Fiction quite a bit (and even Winter Passing, what was even more of a drama).

I would say Everything Must Go is the better film because it looks serious, funny, and light-hearted… Bridesmaids doesn’t look like something Apatow has worked on, and by that I mean it’s just not funny (from what I’ve seen from the trailers)…

I really want to see Everything Must Go, not sure if it is in theaters in the Raleigh area though.
I am a big fan of anything Apatow has his name on usually, and I like Kristen Wiig, but I am just not that excited about Bridesmaids. The trailer/TV spots just don’t do it for me, although I did read one review that said most of the bits in the trailer aren’t actually in the movie. I don’t know if it is because it is an all female cast or what. I’m hoping to hear some good word of mouth, but right now I’m thinking On Demand for Bridesmaids.

My favorite movies are dramedies, but I’m not all that jazzed for Everything Must Go. I enjoyed Stranger Than Fiction quite a bit, but will probably catch EMG on video sometime. If I can find a little time, will probably check out Bridesmaids.

91% Fresh and strong box office for Bridesmaids. Could even fight for a number one spot.

Debating whether to post a full review. My impression of Bridesmaids was that it was good, not great. Two epic funny set pieces that were hilarious - but that’s the same number as in Hall Pass. Bridesmaids is definitely better, but I don’t know it is was that much better. Definitely NOT as good (as a comedy or a drama) as Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which is the closest cousin in Apatow World. 3/5 stars.
