The Ambiguously Gay Duo

One of the most popular series of shorts on Saturday Night Live is The Ambiguously Gay Duo, a series of animated shorts that debuted in 1996. The series was created by longtime SNL writer and sometime performer Robert Smigel, and starred the voices of two then-unknowns: Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell. The series debuted on the short-lived The Dana Carvey Show where Carell and Colbert were costars.

On last night’s episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Ed Helms, a new episode of the series was unveiled. Impressively, midway through the clip the scene changes from animated to live-action. Jon Hamm and Jimmy Fallon play the live-action duo Ace and Gary, with Carell unrecognizable as Bighead, along with Colbert as Branio, Helms as Two-Face, and Fred Armisen as Lizardo.

This is, most likely, the Citizen Kane of sophomoric homosexual humor shorts.

I thought it was funny for such an epic Daily Show reunion (Carell, Colbert & Helms) to take place on SNL

Also, this one the cool things about Carell’s leaving The Office: he can make time for cameos now that he doesn’t have to compact film shoots & press tours during summer hiatus (like the planned Talladega Nights cameo that conflicted with The Office season 2)
