In May we told you about 50/50, a dramedy about cancer starring Seth Rogen. That film is set for release on September 30, and Rogen’s serious year continues with a new movie about infidelity called Take This Waltz. The film costars Michelle Williams, Luke Kirby, and Sarah Silverman and was directed by Sarah Polley. We now know that Take This Waltz will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and there’s a clip below.

I’m not familiar with Polley’s work as a director, but the cinematography and overall feel of the clip and others available online make this look very promising. Better yet, there can hardly be high box office expectations for this or 50/50, meaning that Rogen’s career will not take a hit if the box office isn’t as high as some would expect (see: The Green Hornet, $225m worldwide). Nonetheless, these are probably important projects for Rogen’s career and who knows maybe there will be good reviews or other buzz that will give Rogen a boost outside his traditional schlumpy comedy image.

I saw the trailer for 50/50 at Horrible Bosses, and the audience reacted very favorably to it. A lot of laughter, especially considering the dark subject matter.

And it’s not like this new movie is completely void of comedy. From what I could tell from the clip, it seems like Seth will just be a more toned down version of his usual self.
