Where is the Trailer for ‘The Big Year’?
Entertainment Weekly released their Fall Movie Preview issue this week, including a one page spread on The Big Year, coming to theatres in mid-October and starring Jack Black, Owen Wilson, and Steve Martin. Based on the best-selling book, the film tells the story about three men who are involved with competitive bird-watching. In addition to a preview of the movie, there’s a short interview with the stars that includes a mention of the “previous times” that Wilson and Black worked together (cameos on Community and failed TV pilot Heat Vision and Jack), neither of which resulted in Black and Wilson working in the same room at the same time (Martin gets the punchline, “So you guys are just as close as you never were”).
All of which got me thinking… this movie is supposed to be coming out in about 60 days, shouldn’t there be a trailer out yet? There’s certainly very little time for the typical teaser trailer and later a full trailer type of schedule. Other films from November and December are already getting both - but simply nothing for this one. This can’t be good news for a film that is obviously skewing older and released during a fairly mild part of the box office calendar.
All of which is most likely an incredible bummer on what has already been an uneven year for Owen Wilson, who entered the year as the odds-on favorite for Frat Pack Man of the Year. But, after the poor reviews and box office for Hall Pass and Cars 2, it seems unlikely that The Big Year will join Midnight in Paris to counterbalance things.
On a related note, while researching this article, I came across an interview with The Big Year costar Rashida Jones from 2010, conducted by Jack Black. It’s a pretty good read, and not just because the image below accompanies the interview.
