Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy are on 2011’s Comedy VIP list thanks to the box office success of Horrible Bosses and Bridesmaids. Now Deadline reports the two will co-star in the comedy ID Theft for Universal. Bateman will co-produce the comedy, originally about a guy (Bateman) whose identity had been stolen by another man. However, after seeing McCarthy’s scene-stealing performance in Bridesmaids, Bateman immediately had the identity thief role rewritten for her.

The script comes from Pursuit of Happyness writer Steve Conrad, currently being redrafted by The Hangover Part II co-writer Craig Mazin. ID Theft is scheduled to film in Spring 2012, during McCarthy’s hiatus from filming her sitcom Mike & Molly (which she received an Emmy nomination for last month.)

Bateman is currently attached to The Insane Laws with Vince Vaughn, scheduled to film this fall. He also has the long-rumored Arrested Development film allegedly on the horizon, currently being written by series creator Mitchell Hurwitz. McCarthy is filming a supporting role in Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up spinoff, while Bridesmaids director Paul Feig is currently developing a romantic comedy for her to co-star with Jon Hamm.

Bateman plays the put-upon guy better than anyone not named Ben Stiller.

I don’t think The Insane Laws is going to happen this fall. Vaughn’s got Neighborhood Watch with Stiller set to start filming next month.

Kudos to Bateman for switching the role to a female lead!
