It’s an unusual concept for a movie, and perhaps an unlikely pairing as well. But, the trailer for Seeking a Friend For the End of the World is making this project look quite interesting. The film stars Steve Carell and Keira Knightley and comes from Nick & Nora’s Infinite Playlist scribe Lorene Scafaria, who also helms. Also appearing are Connie Britton, Adam Brody, Roger Aaron Brown, Tonita Castro, Rob Corddry, Melinda Dillon, Rob Huebel, Gillian Jacobs, Derek Luke, Melanie Lynskey, T.J. Miller, Mark Moses, Patton Oswalt, William Petersen, Lindsay Sloane, Bob Stephenson (and what appears to be Carell’s wife Nancy Walls in the first part of the trailer).

Plot Summary: Steve Carell and Keira Knightley star in the comedy “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World,” which marks the feature directorial debut of screenwriter Lorene Scafaria (”Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist”). Set in a too-near future, the movie explores what people will do when humanity’s last days are at hand. As the respective journeys of Dodge (Carell) and Penny (Knightley) converge, the two spark to each other and their outlooks – if not the world’s – brighten.

The film seems well-times for those fans of 2012 end-of-the-world theories, but you can tell there will be a satirical edge to the film that has shades of Idiocracy. As for two leads, nobody seemed to question the romantic angle with a young costar in Get Smart, but Knightley is three years younger than Anne Hathaway. Which doesn’t seem like a lot but somehow seems really different to me.
