Oscar Recap

To the surprise of nobody, films with a comedic flair were few and far between at tonight’s Oscar ceremony. But, as for the Oscar telecast, well, then it’s okay to have plenty of comedians around.

The highlight award wise was Woody Allen winning Best Original Screenplay for Midnight in Paris. The film’s star Owen Wilson appeared on stage with Penelope Cruz to present an award. “Man or Muppet” won the Original Song Oscar, much to the relief of Jason Segel and the others behind the comeback film for the 1970s icons. Jonah Hill, Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy were non-winners among the nominees.

Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis displayed comedic chemistry for their upcoming film Dog Fight during the presentation of the Best Song award. The duo played cymbals and effectively delivered pratfalls. ┬áLater, Ben Stiller and Emma Stone presented the Best Visual Effects Oscar. I was surprised to see Ben dressed plainly for the award, though Stone did comedically remind Stiller about his past elaborate costumes. Stone did an effective job playing crazy, trying to be enthusiastic about the award and even tried to get Superbad costar Jonah Hill to come up to participate. Hill then pantomimed a very funny “cut it out” that brought down the house.
