David Koechner Wins Lifetime Achievement Earmuff Award
Each year, the Frat Pack Tribute editors present a lifetime achivement award at that year’s Frat Pack Tribute Earmuff Awards. Past winners include Stuart Cornfeld, Andy Dick, and Theodore Shapiro. For the 2011 awards, the award was presented to frequent Frat Pack supporting player David Koechner.
Koechner famously played sports anchor Champ Kind in Anchorman, opposite Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, and Steve Carell. Though Koechner has not become a leading man like the other three anchor men, his character is certainly integral to the story and continues to be much beloved. Kind had a signature catch-phrase, “Whammy!”, and also unrequited gay love for Ron Burgundy. Koechner also appeared opposite Ferrell in Talladega Nights and Semi-Pro.
As you look through Koechner’s filmography, he has numerous connections to Frat Pack stars. He had small roles opposite Owen Wilson in Drillbit Taylor and Jack Black in Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny. In addition to appearing in small roles opposite Steve Carell in The 40 Year-Old Virgin and Get Smart, Koecher has a recurring role as the lecherous Todd Packer on The Office. The character returned during Carell’s departure from the series in 2011 and the relationship between the characters had a conclusive payoff. Koechner continues with the role of Todd Packer, recently appearing in a series of episodes.
Koechner has appeared in a variety of roles including Snakes on a Plane, The Dukes of Hazard, and in the charming indie comedy Tenure opposite Luke Wilson. In addition to quirky supporting roles in films such as Extract (opposite Jason Bateman) and The Goods (with Jeremy Piven), Koechner also had juicy role in Jason Reitman’s acclaimed Thank You For Smoking. Koechner’s lone starring role to date was the sport parody The Comebacks. The actor appeared on Saturday Night Live for one season. Koechner also costarred in The Naked Trucker and T-Bones Show on Comedy Central, which featured cameos from Ferrell, Black, Carell, Rudd.
In 2011, Koechner was seen in Final Destination 5 and A Good Old-Fashioned Orgy. He also appeared with Jason Bateman in the Seth Rogen alien comedy Paul. Bateman also produced a web series called “Always Open,” a promo for Denny’s starring Koechner interviewing stars such as Will Arnett, Amy Poehler, Will Forte and Sarah Silverman. He will be seen in the upcoming sequel Piranha 3DD later this year.
Koechner’s long history demonstrates that he has diverse comedy skills and often excels at playing dim, cocky, or horny characters. Of course, his signature role as Champ Kind features a character who is dim, cocky, and horny. With so many Frat Pack connections and a long history of hilarious performances, there’s no doubt that this year’s recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award is deserving. Whammy!
