Will Ferrell will be appearing tonight on Conan as Ron Burgundy, and according to reports from Deadline is set to announce that Anchorman 2 has been greenlit. As with the original 2004 film, the sequel will be directed by Adam McKay and produced by Judd Apatow. In addition to Ferrell, other cast members including Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and recent Earmuff Award winner David Koechner are expected to return.  Less certain is the availability of Christina Applegate.  Updated: Koechner tweeted that he is indeed going to be in the movie.

The sequel to one of the seminal Frat Pack films has had a long and sad past. The film appeared to be shelved indefinitely a number of times, only to return to the rumor mill time and time again. This time it appears that the cast and studio have come to a mutually agreed upon financial arrangement.

Updated: According to The Hollywood Reporter, production will begin towards the end of 2012, with a release slated for 2013. Director Adam McKay later tweeted that shooting will start in February.

Sweeeeeeeet! I wonder how this will affect Step Brothers 2. Hope it doesn’t mean that one is done.

Watched Anchorman just last night. Been jonesing for some Burgundy for too long. This, along with the news that Owen and Zach are starring in Matt Weiner’s feature film debut is the best news today and probably all year, in terms of Fratvillian projects.

I watched it, too. I think there were A LOT of people watching the movie in the last 24 hrs. Still really, really funny.

I actually watched it on TV on BBC here in the UK, before this announcement was made. Just pure coincidence.

Well… I’d say, no pressure, guys, but 2oolander probably hinges upon this being a monumental success. So make sure it’s done right.

But here’s what I think: Paramount should throw both movies into production, have them shoot pretty much back to back, and then release Anchorman in May and Zoolander in August, or vice versa, and do cross-promotion during the spring and summer: have Ron interview Derek and Hansel à la Charlie Rose. Have Ron interview Mugatu in prison. Do a huge double-bill in New York when the second one comes out, with celebrities attending and talking about Burgundy and Zoolander the way they talked about Derek at the VH1 Fashion Awards. Do a Celebrity Jeopardy with Ron, Derek, and Hansel!! Do an Inside the Actor’s Studio segment with all the actors from both movies! With the actual James Lipton! Then have Will Ferrell’s James Lipton come out, and let the two do a talk-off: who can come up with the most ridiculous questions?
