Deadline is reporting that Owen Wilson will be starring in the action film The Coup, set to begin filming later this year. The film is to be helmed and cowritten by John Erick Dowdle (Devil) and will shoot in Southeast Asia. This film would appear to be a very serious departure from Wilson’s easygoing cinematic persona.

Deadline’s Mike Fleming reports that “The film is described as an intense thriller centered on an American family that moves to Southeast Asia and finds themselves embroiled in a violent coup where rebels mercilessly attack the city. Wilson plays the father in a film that has the tone of Taken, and puts him in action mode for the first time since Behind Enemy Lines.” Wilson had been previously set to film the action-comedy Tropic Thunder but had to bow out due to personal issues (ultimately replaced by buddy Matthew McConaughey), and starred in two Shanghai Noon films that were more comedy than action.
