The trailer for Judd Apatow’s next directorial effort, This is 40, was released today. In addition to playing in theatres with The Five-Year Engagement, the trailer is also available from Apple’s Trailer website and in other venues. The film will be released at Christmas but is already advertised with an R-rating.

This is 40 is the “sort of sequel to Knocked Up” and the trailer sets up the story fairly well. Pete and Debbie (Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann) are hitting their fourth generation and decide to make changes in their lives. Thus the hilarity ensues. Also starring are Maude and Iris Apatow, along with Megan Fox, Albert Brooks, Charlyne Yi, and John Lithgow. Seen in the trailer are Jason Segel (reprising his role from Knocked Up), Melissa McCarthy, and Bridesmaids cowriter Annie Mumolo. Some famous musicians are seen in photographs on Pete’s desk.

Perhaps the most risque moment features Rudd in a let’s just say vulnerable position. The segment from the film has already inspired it’s own animated GIF meme.

Writer/director/producer Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Funny People) brings audiences This Is 40, an original comedy that expands upon the story of Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) from the blockbuster hit Knocked Up as we see firsthand how they are dealing with their current state of life.

If it sticks in the final cut, “I saw your have babies. Payback time” might catch on as a signature catch-phrase.

That’s the same “You do look like your sister” gynecologist from Knocked Up too

Looks very good. If Judd is going for the dramedy, maybe he has a shot at a Best Original Screenplay nomination? Or Rudd getting a Best Actor nom?
