Steve Carell returns to theaters with a new movie with a quirky premise and a modest theatrical release. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World tells the story of what happens when a meteor will destroy the Earth in 21 days. Steve Carell plays rule-follower Dodge who goes on journey with extroverted neighbor Penny (Keira Knightley). The film is the feature directorial debut of screenwriter Lorene Scafaria (Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist) and features familiar faces such as Patton Oswalt, T.J. Miller, and Rob Corddry.

The film opens today but don’t look for it at the top of the box office charts come Sunday. Focus Features is releasing the film in just 1400 theaters, most likely due to the film’s tricky storyline and apparent mix of drama and comedy. It is also unclear if there’s a romantic angle between the two stars and whether the twenty year age difference would appeal to audiences.

Nonetheless, this is exactly the kind of unusual project that Steve Carell has time for with his departure from The Office. If you’ve seen the film, leave a comment below.
