Is ‘Hangover III’ Epic, or just a Finale?

Billed as the “epic finale to The Hangover Trilogy”, The Hangover Part III opens today in a crowded marketplace. Todd Phillips returns as writer and director as do the “wolfpack” of Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis. The film returns to it’s Vegas roots and promises bigger and more outrageous situations.

Reviews for Part II were bad, with it’s retread of a plot.┬áThis time there’s no “retrace our steps” storyline but the plot does place “good friend” Doug (Justin Bartha) out of view for most of the movie once again, and allows scene-stealer Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong) to have even more screen-time this go-round. Melissa McCarthy, Heather Graham, and John Goodman costar.

The film opens Memorial Day weekend, just as Part II did in 2011. That film opened to $135 million over five days, but Part III faces stiff competition from the still-ascending franchise film Fast & Furious 6, the kid-friendly Epic, and still-strong holdovers Star Trek Into Darkness and Iron Man 3. The reviews are no better for Part III, so box office returns are sure to suffer some - the only question is how much.

I’d give this a 3/5. It’s a step up from the laziness of Part II, but nowhere near as funny as the original. Also, the third act is a little forced. The script does show signs of being rushed into production, also doesn’t give Cooper & Helms much to do. But it does serve as closing up the series at the right time, and both Galifianakis & Jeong turn in great performances with their extended screentime.

Didn’t feel much like a comedy. I don’t think it could figure out what it wanted to be. Reactions seem more muted than they did for Hangover Part II.

I concur with Rick. Definitely some funny moments and some really funny stuff with Helms in particular. But definitely not as funny as even part two was though at least it was more original. Reviewers complaining all Cooper did was say Fuck were pretty much correct.

Fast and Furious 6 had better intentionally funny moments than this.

Box office results are in. It looks like it’s going to make less in its entire run than Hangover 2 made in its first weekend, which was a 5-day weekend.
