HBO announced that Eastbound & Down will begin filming an eight-episode fourth season and this will be the final season for show. Filming will again be in North Carolina and the season will debut  on September 29. Co-creator and star Danny McBride will return as Kenny Powers, the hard-living baseball player. Powers realized his dream of making it back to the big leagues in the finale of season 3, only to walk away from the mound and return home to his beloved April and son Toby. According to HBO, “The upcoming fourth season picks up the action several years later and finds Kenny living the American Dream with his family in North Carolina.” No other casting announcements were provided, though it seems certain that Katy Mixon will return as April.

Some headlines are calling this announcement a “cancellation” for the HBO series. Considering that the creative team had initially planned to end the series after both seasons one and seasons three, it’s not really accurate to characterize the announcement of a final season as a cancellation.

EASTBOUND & DOWN, the raucous HBO comedy series from creators Danny McBride and Jody Hill, begins shooting its eight-episode fourth and final season tomorrow in North Carolina, with the season scheduled to launch SUNDAY, SEPT. 29 (10:00-10:30 p.m. ET/PT). McBride stars in the show as the irrepressible Kenny Powers, the former major league pitcher who is larger than life… and death.

In the third season of EASTBOUND & DOWN, which concluded in April 2012, Kenny Powers finally made it back to the majors and recaptured his former glory, only to fake his own death and run back home to his beloved April, the mother of his child. The upcoming fourth season picks up the action several years later and finds Kenny living the American Dream with his family in North Carolina.

The third season of EASTBOUND & DOWN inspired raves, with People calling it “Terrific. The jokes take off on all sorts of unexpected trajectories – foul balls that score…Four out of four stars,” whileEntertainment Weekly said, “You should make time to get down with ‘Down’,” rewarding the show an A-.

EASTBOUND & DOWN is executive produced by Jody Hill, Danny McBride, Will Ferrell, Chris Henchy and Adam McKay

McBride of course has This is The End coming out on Wednesday June 12. Appears that his promotional duties are now over. It was also announced that McBride will be producing and lending voice to the animated series Chozen for FXX. According to the Deadline article, “Bobby Moynihan (Saturday Night Live) will voice the lead character in the comedy, about a gay white rapper fresh out of prison with a new message and new skills, which he will use in his quest for redemption and domination.” Kathryn Hahn, Nick Swardson, and Michael Pena are also part of the cast.
