Owen Wilson and Jim Carrey in The Cable Guy

Deadline reports that Owen Wilson is joining Jim Carrey in an untitled action comedy, from director Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre.) The film, formerly titled Loomis Fargo, follows a disgruntled armored car driver persuaded into stealing $20 million. After a betrayal by his partners leaves him stranded in Mexico, he launches a revenge plot.

This marks the first time Carrey and Wilson will appear together in over 17 years, following their memorable fight scene in 1996’s The Cable Guy. The film could be a much needed boost for both stars, with Wilson coming off a mediocre opening weekend for The Internship, and Carrey having Warner Bros drop plans for a Dumb & Dumber sequel earlier today, just months after the embarrassing box office performance of Burt Wonderstone.

The film boasts an eclectic mix of producers, including comedy icon Lorne Michaels (SNL) who will produce alongside John Goldwyn (whose credits include The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Baby Mama, Hot Rod, and Showtime’s Dexter.) Eastbound and Down masterminds Danny McBride and Jody Hill are among the names receiving Executive Producer credits (both have writing credits on a previous draft of the script.) The script’s most recent draft, written by Up All Night creator Emily Spivey, is currently being re-written by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer, the team behind the indie comedy Humble Pie.

With so many interesting names handling the project, it will be interesting to see what tone the final project will take. Jared Hess has his quirky sense of humor, and the writers attached to the current draft seem to compliment that. The involvement of Michaels and Goldwyn seems to suggest they’d add some larger comedic set pieces to the mix.

Would love to see Owen cast against type as the guy seeking revenge.
