The Incredible Burt Wonderstone didn’t do great box office this spring, but Steve Carell is back this weekend with two films. The big release is the animated sequel Despicable Me 2, where Carell voices the nominal lead character Gru. The advertising has focused on the minions (who are also getting a spinoff film) but Carell has been doing press to promote the film.

Carell’s Anchorman 2 love-interest Kristen Wiig costars as a secret agent and (yep) love-interest for Gru. Wiig appeared in the orignal film in a different role. Russell Brand, Ken Jeong, and Steve Coogan appear in vocal form, but the original film’s nemesis played by Jason Segel is not returning. Despicable Me 2 opens on July 3.

In other Kristen Wiig news, the writer-actress confirmed this week she’s passed on the opportunity to develop and star in a sequel to Bridesmaids. This should not come as a surprise to readers of this blog, since we told you back in January 2012 that Wiig would not be returning.

Opening on Friday in limited release is the indie coming of age film The Way Way Back. Carell plays a true villain in this film as an abusive stepdad. The Way Way Back is written and directed by Nax Faxon and Jim Rash who won Oscars cowriting The Descendants.  Also starring are Sam Rockwell, Allison Janney, AnnaSophia Robb, Maya Rudolph, Amanda Peet, Rob Corddry, and Liam James.
