This is The End will return to theaters on September 6. The well-received comedy opened to June and has grossed $96m so far, so the second open no doubt is designed to push the film past $100m. Comedy fans have been starved for something new, with We’re the Millers displaying outstanding legs with more than $116m to date and excellent weekend holds since it opened a month ago. But September looks weak on comedies, hence the void that This is The End is attempting to fill.

And the timing couldn’t be better with the Roast of James Franco airing tonight and keeping the stars of This is The End fresh in the minds of filmgoers. James Franco recently interviewed his This is The End costar Jonah Hill for Playboy. And several principals from the film are appearing on the Roast broadcast, notably This is The End writer/director Seth Rogen who is the Roastmaster for the Comedy Central broadcast. I’m sure costar Danny McBride will appreciate the visibility as well, with Eastbound & Down coming back at the end of the month.

It’s interesting that the film is presented “as is.” I could easily have imagined the re-release including additional footage or bonus outtakes as a way to lure folks who’ve already seen the film. Coincidentally, the similarly themed comedy The World’s End from Edgar Wright opened just last week to modest box office.

A teaser for the re-release is shown below.
