Interesting bit of inside-baseball news about next summer’s release schedule. Deadline is reporting that Sony will move Sex Tape starring Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz away from it’s planned July 2 release date and will instead open the movie to July 18. Sex Tape is directed by Jake Kasdan (Bad Teacher, Walk Hard) and also stars Jack Black and in a bit of an inside joke also costars Rob Lowe (you see, kids, Rob Lowe was one of the first Hollywood stars to get caught in a sex tape scandal back in the 1980s… oh, never mind).

The reason for Sony’s move away from the lucrative July 4th weekend? Well, it seems that there’s another comedy also set to open that weekend and it stars what appears to be the reigning queen of comedy box office, Melissa McCarthy. Tammy was cowritten by McCarthy with husband Ben Falcone (Bridesmaids) who is also directing.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tammy’s plot goes like this: “the story centers on a woman who is laid off from her job at a fast food restaurant, discovers her husband is having an affair and decides to go on a road trip with her foul-mouthed, alcoholic, diabetic grandmother.” Susan Sarandon, Dan Ackroyd, Kathy Bates, Mark Duplass and Allison Janney also star in what is described as a hard-R comedy. In other words, right in McCarthy’s wheelhouse.

Update:

Deadline is reporting that Ellie Kemper (The Office) has joined the cast of Sex Tape.
