New ‘Anchorman 2′ International Trailer Reveals Ford, Crack. Alternate Cut of Film an Option, According to Director McKay
Lots of Anchorman 2 news for you today. First, here’s the very hilarious international trailer, featuring an appearance by Harrison Ford as well as a nice joke about crack cocaine. There’s more in the ‘RV accident’ scene as well. Director Adam McKay went through the trailer with commentary for Empire.
Also news today is a poster for the film, featuring the entire news team. Though, if you look closely, Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, and Paul Rudd all have their names above the title, whereas costars David Koechner and Christina Applegate are below the title. At least Koechner got onto the poster.
Meanwhile, director McKay has indicated they are seriously considering releasing an alternate cut of the film for midnight screenings and other venues. The final cut of the film comes in at a tidy one hour and 53 minutes, which director McKay calls “the longest one we’ve ever done” and which producer Judd Apatow might describe as a “short.” Even with the expanded length, there’s plenty of additional footage and alternate jokes. McKay also noted he was fighting with the MPAA over the rating, so maybe it’s possible the alternate cut might be an R rather than PG-13. The director told Empire:
We did so much improv on this one that we can literally replace every single joke in the movie and put in alt scenes and alt improv runs. I think the editor’s working on it right now, with 250 new jokes. I think it would be really funny to put it in theatres for midnight showings. I know that I personally, if I loved a movie and someone told me that, like if Airplane! had been released with all-new jokes, I’d be like, ‘you’ve got to be fucking kidding me!’ I’d see it in a second.
The idea of an alternate cut shouldn’t surprise anyone, since McKay and company have already done this with the DVD Special Edition release of Wake Up Ron Burgundy, which was a supposed sequel made up from discarded plot lines and alternate takes.
