Is ‘Free Birds’ the Owen Wilson/Woody Harrelson Buddy Picture We’ve Been Waiting For?

Best buds Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson topline the new 3D animated film Free Birds, opening in theaters today. The pair have a close, personal relationship but haven’t shared time on the big screen until now. But, is Free Birds really the kind of film we want to see these two together in? Though I’d be shocked if there weren’t some subtle “got the munchies” jokes here (riffing on Wilson/Harrelson’s stoner personas), a family film isn’t really where this pairing would be most effective.

Free Birds is directed longtime animator and Horton Hears a Who! director Jimmy Hayward, and costars Amy Poehler, Dan Fogler, George Takei, Keith David, and Colm Meaney. The film tells the story of a turkey played by Wilson who lives an easy life but gets involved with a radical bird looking to liberate turkeys from the Thanksgiving tradition. Faster than you can say time machine, the who birds travel back to the time of the Pilgrims to change history forever.

If you’ve seen Free Birds, leave a comment below. Until then, check out these photos from the film’s premiere.
