Opening today among a crowded marketplace is Ben Stiller’s latest starring and directing vehicle The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Based on the James Thurber short story, the fantastical story stars Stiller as Walter Mitty, a daydreaming staffer at Life magazine who goes on a real-life adventure looking for a missing photo. Kristen Wiig costars as a coworker and love interest, with Adam Scott, Kathryn Hahn, and Sean Penn also starring.

Stiller has a great track record as director, with his last film Tropic Thunder winning accolades and several awards. But Walter Mitty seems to show a more nuanced and mature vision for Stiller as an actor and filmmaker. The film is opening during the very crowded Christmas season which can be potentially lucrative due to high daily box office returns, but can be risky if the film doesn’t really connect with audiences (see: The Guilt Trip and This is 40). Stiller hasn’t had a big hit since Little Fockers in 2010. ¬†Early buzz painted the film as a potential awards play, but that sentiment has cooled considerably. Maybe there’s room for a family-friendly fantasy based on real-life rather than Middle Earth.

I saw a screening for this not long ago and been meaning to write a review for the site. Overall it’s an accomplishment in directing for Stiller, and is a perfect holiday treat for all.
