‘Anchorman 2′ Returning to Theaters with Super-Sized R-Rated Alternate Cut
The holiday hit Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues will return to theaters for one week starting on February 28th. The re-release is an alternate cut of the film with “763 new jokes” and is both long and raunchier than the version released at Christmas. The new R-rated version also appears to include the extended musical sequence that was cut from the original version. The gay-themed song appears in the trailer for the new release, shown below.
Prior to the film’s release, director Adam McKay had discussed the possibility of releasing an alternate version. Considering how the film was made with McKay, producer Judd Apatow, and the actors able to improvise and provide different variants of punch-lines it’s no wonder that there’s plenty of new material to work with. With the original Anchorman film there was a similar editing experiment with the DVD-extra film Wake Up Ron Burgundy that was constructed from a dropped storyline, additional scenes, and alternate versions of jokes.
Anchorman 2 grossed over $125m domestically and nearly $45m internationally, both significantly higher than for the original film.
