Kyle Gass, Jack Black, and Danny McBride

Much was made yesterday about the faux campaign materials for the upcoming political comedy The Campaign, starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis. The problem with these “viral videos” is that aren’t very funny. Not funny at all, in fact (which is, you know, kind of a problem when what you’re trying to sell is a comedy).  Thankfully, we have a new Tenacious D video that has is actually funny and actually something you’d want to share with your friends.

“The Roadie” is an extended music video for the song from the upcoming Tenacious D album, and featured a great introduction to the character of Sebastian who will be the new roadie for Jack Black and Kyle Gass’ band. Danny McBride plays the roadie which characteristic aplomb and the video is really entertaining. We’re definitely looking forward The D’s new album, Rise of the Fenix, which is released on May 15th.

Jonah Hill, Ben Stiller, Richard Ayoade, Vince Vaughn in The Watch

What is more surprising is now completely filthy this red-band trailer is. Thought Jonah Hill might be playing it safe now that he’s an Oscar nominee and now costarring in a Scorcese film? You’ll be sadly mistaken when you see the scene where he basically volunteers for anal rape. And it’s nice to see Vince Vaughn using R-rated dialogue again too, after many years.

Jon Favreau

Jon Favreau will be joining the cast of Identity Thief, according to Variety. The film stars Jason Bateman as a many who’s identity is stollen by a woman played by Melissa McCarthy. Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses) directs. Other cast members include Amanda Peet.

Favreau will play Bateman’s boss in the film, which looks like a good match based on the pair’s on-screen chemistry in the Vince Vaughn vehicles The Break-Up and Couples Retreat.

Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann

The trailer for Judd Apatow’s next directorial effort, This is 40, was released today. In addition to playing in theatres with The Five-Year Engagement, the trailer is also available from Apple’s Trailer website and in other venues. The film will be released at Christmas but is already advertised with an R-rating.

This is 40 is the “sort of sequel to Knocked Up” and the trailer sets up the story fairly well. Pete and Debbie (Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann) are hitting their fourth generation and decide to make changes in their lives. Thus the hilarity ensues. Also starring are Maude and Iris Apatow, along with Megan Fox, Albert Brooks, Charlyne Yi, and John Lithgow. Seen in the trailer are Jason Segel (reprising his role from Knocked Up), Melissa McCarthy, and Bridesmaids cowriter Annie Mumolo. Some famous musicians are seen in photographs on Pete’s desk.

Perhaps the most risque moment features Rudd in a let’s just say vulnerable position. The segment from the film has already inspired it’s own animated GIF meme.

Synopsis

Writer/director/producer Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Funny People) brings audiences This Is 40, an original comedy that expands upon the story of Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) from the blockbuster hit Knocked Up as we see firsthand how they are dealing with their current state of life.

Jason Segel

Judd Apatow scored scored a surprise hit last spring when his production Bridemaids opened far above expectations and had extremely strong legs at the box office. Team Apatow is hoping for similar fortunes with The Five-Year Engagement that opens today, starring Jason Segel and Emily Blunt. You’d be hard-pressed to miss the Bridesmaids connection, since the ads have hammered home “from the producer of Bridesmaids.”  The film is directed by Apatow pal Nicholas Stoller, who previously helmed Segel in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

I’ve been vocal that I haven’t loved the trailers and ads, even the supposedly raunchy red-band trailer didn’t seem very racy to me. And there are reports that Segel’s nude scene has been cut from the film (this could be a plus or minus, I admit). But, the film seems to be the only recently opening mainstream comedy so there are certainly box office returns to be expected.
